A post-doctoral position is open in the field of single molecule fluorescence microscopy.

J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the CAS, v.v.i., offers a postdoctoral position under the project: Oxidative stress as an essential modulator of Bax apoptotic activity: molecular insights by single-molecule fluorescence

Job description:

The offered position is part of ongoing research at the Department of Biophysical Chemistry, which focuses on molecular explanation of how oxidative stress influences the apoptosis of cells. The entire process is tightly regulated by members of the Bcl-2 protein family, which interact on the external surface of mitochondria, and modulate their permeability to apoptotic factors, controlling their release into the cytosol. During normal cell conditions, anti-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family inhibit the pro-apoptotic protein members (such as Bax), ensuring survival of the cell. In contrast, upon an intrinsic apoptotic stress signal, pro-apoptotic members become activated and overcome a protective role of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins. This causes oligomerization of some Bcl-2 proteins into pores and release of apoptogenic factors from the mitochondrial intermembrane space into the cytosol. A general aim of this proposal is to understand this mechanism at molecular level using various in vitro system. The candidate is expected to be involved in all stages of research including protein expression and purification, single molecule fluorescence measurements, analysis and interpretation of data and publishing the results. Currently we are searching for a new team member with good experience in molecular biology or biochemistry.

General requirements:

  • PhD degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics or related fields.
  • Advanced level of written and spoken English.
