Re: Open letter to Professor Hořejší

Dear Professor Hořejší,

We have carefully read your article “Olomoucká historie – kde je pravda a kdo lže? Byl potrestán whistleblower?” (“Olomouc history - where is the truth and who is lying? Was the whistleblower punished? ”) published on the internet platform www.dzurnal.cz on 26.08.2019. In this article you summarize the facts in the case of the data manipulation in the field of Physical Chemistry (i.e. the publication “Catalytic Efficiency of Iron(III) Oxides in Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide:  Competition between the Surface Area and Crystallinity of Nanoparticles” by Heřmánek M. Zbořil R., Medrik I., Pechoušek J. and Gregor C. JACS 2007; 129 (35): 10929-36) and the disclosure of that manipulation by the dignitaries of the Palacký University Olomouc. The management as well as the Institute’s board of the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of CAS would like to express the appreciation of your efforts to summarize that case in a maximum objective manner. We are fully convinced that you wrote that article as an absolutely unbiased observer, and that you have no interest to harm any participant in this matter, nor to interfere the current discussions regarding possible organizational changes at Palacký University Olomouc. We see your efforts to base your view solely on facts being free of any negative bias towards any participant in this matter so as to ensure that truth, responsibility and integrity remain main pillars in Czech Science.

On behalf of the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences,

Martin Hof,                                                                Patrik Španěl,

Director of the Institute                                           Chairman of the Board of the Institut
