Congratulations to Prof. Jiří Zima on his election as rector of Charles University

On 30 October 2025, the Academic Senate of Charles University elected Professor Jiří Zima, an analytical chemist from the Faculty of Science, as the new Rector of Charles University. He will officially assume office in February 2026, following his appointment by the President of the Czech Republic. Professor Zima has been a long-standing collaborator of the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry and is a recipient of the Rudolf Brdička Medal, which was presented to him in 2021 by the Institute’s Director, Martin Hof.

In his scientific work, Professor Zima focuses primarily on voltammetric methods for analyzing biologically active organic compounds that are important in terms of environmental protection and human health. He is also engaged in the development of new methods for determining these substances using carbon paste electrodes.

A respected researcher in analytical chemistry

Professor Zima has maintained a close and fruitful partnership with the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry, significantly contributing to strengthening cooperation between the Faculty of Science at Charles University and our Institute — particularly in research and student training. His research interests closely align with those of our Institute, as evidenced by numerous joint publications.

In 2021, he was awarded the Rudolf Brdička Medal by the J. Heyrovský Institute for his outstanding contributions to physical chemistry and for his long-standing collaboration with the Institute.
