Electrochemical preparation of functional ZnO thin films
Abstract:
Electrodeposition is a versatile method for the preparation of semiconductor oxide thin films. These films are highly reactive and can be easily modified by simple treatments in aqueous or organic solutions. In this seminar, I shall illustrate how different strategies can be developed to impart ZnO thin films with new functionalities. Examples will be given concerning luminescence, lasing, electrochromism, sensitization, photocatalysis, superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity of ZnO. These properties can arise from the shape at the nanoscale of the ZnO deposits. The control of the film nanostructure is performed by playing on the nucleation –growth mechanism of the oxide or by using structure directing agents (SDA) which are removed from the layer after the synthesis to recover a pure oxide. Another strategy consists in modifying the ZnO surfaces by adsorption of organic or organometallic molecules. One can also use dye additives in the electrodeposition bath. Due to their interactions with ZnO, they are co-deposited and incorporated in the films where they act as an active component.
