Participation of the Czech Republic on European fusion reasearch

At the end of 1999 a „Contract of Association between the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) and the Institute of Plasma Physics" was signed, its gol is an integration of the Czech Republic into the European fusion research programms. This agreement creates Association EURATOM - IPP.CR which coordinates the Czech research in the field of nuclear fusion and the international collaboration with other 20 Associations.

Tha main center and coordinator of the Association is the Institute of Plasma Physics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Here, is solved namely the physics programme linked to the CASTOR tokamak. Further, on the Association acvtivities participate also other laboratories.

Steering Committee of the Association IPP.CR consists of 3 representants of the Czech part and of 3 representants of the Brussels administratives. It approves obtained results and workplan for next period. The scientific profile of the Association is formed every year on a meeting of International Advisory board

Additionally, following agreements were signed:
  • European Fusion Developement Agreement (EFDA) that covers the common techology research, collaboration on the ITER project , and coordination with industry. In frame of this agreement is opperated the largest European tokamak - JET;

  • Agreement on Promotion of Staff Mobility in the field of Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion that enables visits of scientists between associations;

  • JET Implementing Agreement that enables particiopation of Czech scientists on research programme of the JET tokamak.

Further, our Association takes part on on activities of the EURATOM control institutions. In total, 60 scientists and technitians particpates on activities in frame of the Association IPP.CR. The budget on physics research is about 21.5 mil CZK/year, expences on technology tasks are about 15 mil CZK/year. Part of the expenses (20-40%, depending on its nature) is covered by EURATOM. The staff mobility (cca 1.5 mil CZK/year) is paid by EURATOM nearly fully.
