Collisions of slow polyatomic ions with surfaces: Energy transfer and chemical reactions.
No. A4040405, Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic
Collisions of slow polyatomic ions with defined surfaces will be investigated using a newly developed method of ion-surface scattering. From the measurements of mass spectra, translational energy and angular distributions of product ions conclusions willbe drawn about energy partitioning in surface collisions and about chemical reactions at surfaces and their mechanism. The projectile ions used will include hydrocarbon cations C2Hn+ and C3Hn+, alcohol and ketone cations, chemically reactive and multipl y-charged ions. The surfaces investigated will be surfaces covered by self-assembled monolayers (SAM) with specific terminal groups, and carbon surfaces at room and elevated (1000K) temperature. Theoretical methods will be used to obtain information on the ionic species and to model the collision process. The results are of relevance for plasma-wall interaction in fusion research and as one of the methods of ion activation in analysis of ionized organic and bioorganic molecules.
